Intonation in English: Falling and Rising Tunes

In spoken English, intonation, the rise and fall in pitch while speaking, plays a crucial role in conveying the speaker’s intent, mood, or attitude. As Iyabode (2011) explains, intonation patterns in English are not random; they follow predictable contours that add meaning beyond the words themselves. Two of the most commonly used intonation patterns are the falling and rising tunes.

Falling Intonation (Falling Tune)

The falling tune is generally associated with a sense of finality, certainty, or completion. It typically occurs in:

- Commands, where a firm or strong tone is used to express urgency or authority. 

 

- Declarative statements that present factual or confident information.

Rising Intonation (Rising Tune)

The rising tune is characterized by an upward pitch at the end of an utterance. It typically expresses:

- Yes/No (polar) questions, which expect a simple confirmation or denial.

- Declarative questions, which are structured as statements but delivered with a rising intonation to imply uncertainty.

- Polite requests, warnings, or encouragements.
