What is Phonetics and Phonology?

Phonetics is the branch of linguistics that studies the physical production and acoustic properties of speech sounds: how they are articulated, transmitted, and perceived. Phonology, on the other hand, deals with how those sounds function within a particular language or languages, focusing on sound patterns and the rules that govern them.

According to Iyabode (2011), phonetics is concerned with the physical characteristics of speech sounds, while phonology focuses on how those sounds operate in specific linguistic systems. The two fields are closely related but serve different purposes in the analysis of language.
